Punakha is the old capital of Bhutan and lies at an elevation of 1,200m/3,940ft above sea level. The district of Punakha is the largest rice producer in the country as its weather is warm and temperate making it very favourable for rice production. The ‘Palace of Great Bliss’ or Punakha Dzong is the second largest and second oldest fortress in the Kingdom and it displays fine Bhutanese architecture and craftsmanship.
